WHY YOUR COMPANY SHOULD HAVE A DRUG-FREE WORKPLACE PROGRAM

Every company should have a drug-free workplace program to reduce hiring costs, minimize risk and improve safety.

Hiring a QUALITY employee COSTS a lot of money by either investing in advertisements or hiring a staffing firm (Third-Party) and TIME by going through the hiring phase (interviews) and the training phase.

No business, regardless of size or location, is immune to the countless problems that alcohol and drug abuse can cause. Most individuals who abuse alcohol and other drugs are employed, and when they arrive for work, they don’t leave their problems outside the door.

WHY CHOOSE US?

Complete Lab & Drug Test will help your business Reduce Hiring Costs, Minimize Risk and Improve Safety.

With a free consultation, Complete Lab & Drug Test will assess your company’s needs and design a program which complies with State and Federal (DOT) regulations (if applicable). LET US HANDLE EVERYTHING!

STATE DISCOUNTS

Lower your Workers Compensation Premiums With a “Drug-Free Workplace” Program. As of 2016, 13 states had laws that provide a discount on laws that provide a discount on workers compensation insurance to employers that implement a drug-free workplace.

 • Ohio– O.A.C. 4123-17-58 Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation has issued a rule that provides a five-year phased in workers’ compensation premium reduction that can rise as high as twenty percent.

The following statistics are of risk & costs associated with hiring illicit drug and heavy alcohol users and the benefit of having the Drug-Free workplace program.

THE RISK & COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH HIRING ILLICIT DRUG & HEAVY ALCOHOL USER:

BENEFIT OF HAVING DRUG-FREE WORKPLACE PROGRAM:
 • Improvements in morale and productivity and decreases in absenteeism, accidents, downtime, turnover, and theft.
 • Better health status among employees and family members and reduced healthcare costs.
 • Qualify for decreased costs associated with short- and long-term disability and workers’ compensation

SMALL BUSINESSES MOST VULNERABLE:

When it comes to workplace substance abuse, small businesses have a big disadvantage. They are less likely to have programs in place to combat the problem, yet they are more likely to be the “employer-of-choice” for illicit drug users. Individuals who can’t adhere to a drug-free workplace policy seek employment at firms that don’t have one, and the cost of just one error caused by an impaired employee can devastate a small company.

FULL-TIME EMPLOYED ILLICIT DRUG USERS:
44% work for small establishments (1-24 employees)
43% work for medium establishments (25-499 employees)
13 % work for large establishments (500 or more employees)
FULL-TIME EMPLOYED HEAVY DRINKERS:

BREATH ALCOHOL TEST (BAT)

Overview

A breath alcohol test, also known as a BAT, can determine the level of alcohol in your blood by testing the amount of alcohol on your breath. There are two types of devices used to measure the blood alcohol content of a person or the BAC. The first one is a manual device where the person blows into a balloon or a glass tube and the crystals inside will change color if alcohol is detected on the breath. The second device is an
electronic meter where the person will blow into it. The results will show up digitally in a display window almost immediately. The electronic device is more expensive, but it gives more accurate results.

Here at Complete Lab and Drug Test, we strive to offer top-notch services to all of our clients from beginning to end. We offer comprehensive BAT testing both at the clients’ site as well as our facility. If you feel one of your employees needs testing, call us to set up an on-site appointment where we will come to you! Put safety first and get fast and accurate results by professionals.

Reasons for a BAT
There are many reasons a person would submit to a Breath Alcohol Test (BAT). Here are the most common ones:

Suspicion of impaired driving– Law enforcement will administer the BAT if they suspect a person is driving drunk.

Professional drivers who have had an accident while on the clock– This is usually one of the first things done when a driver is involved in an accident; to eliminate alcohol as the cause of the accident.

The condition of probation– Those who are found guilty of an OVI and given probation will have to get the Interlock system installed in their cars. In order to be able to start the car, the person will have to breathe into a machine similar to the electronic device. If the meter reads 0.00 the car will start. The interlock system is expensive and the person on probation pays for it, not the court.

Reasonable Suspicion Testing– If the employer has reasonable suspicion that a person has been drinking on the job, he or she can demand a reasonable suspicion testing BAT.

Random Alcohol Testing– Companies enrolled in Drug-Free Workplace Program or Random Consortium Program may have one or more employee selected for random breath alcohol test (BAT).The employee, he or she must take the random breath acohol test (BAT) IMMEDITATELY.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT DRUG TEST

General Information
In order to maintain a safe, drug-free environment, employers will request a pre-employment drug test for all applicants. Applicants will sign an agreement waiver and will take the test at a designated location. In almost all cases, the employer will absorb the cost of the drug test. In cases where the applicant has to pay out of pocket, they are usually reimbursed by the employer.
The employer will give a very specific me frame in which to take the drug test so that the applicant does not have enough me to try and flush out the drug in some way.

Types of Tests
The standard pre-employment test used by employers is the five-panel test. This will test for the five most common street drugs. Among the five most common street drugs are cocaine, marijuana, opiates, amphetamines, and phencyclidine, also known as PCP.
Methamphetamines, speed, ecstasy, heroin, crack cocaine, hash, and will all show up on
the drug test.

The second most common type of pre-employment drug test used is the 10-panel test.
This is used to test for the five initial drugs plus five more. The other five included in this test are methadone, methaqualone, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, and propoxyphene. In addition, this test will detect traces of Valium, Xanax, and Librium.

If the applicant is on a prescribed medication on that will pop up on a drug test, it is crucial that he or she disclose this to the employer and technician. A valid prescribed
on will be needed and chances are the test will prove whether or the not correct dose is being taken.

RANDOM CONSORTIUM PROGRAM

General Information
Prior to starting any type of job that is considered safety-sensitive by the Department of Transportation, an individual must submit to a drug test. Careers that are considered safety-sensitive include truck drivers, pilots,
ferry and train conductors, and those who plan to work on pipelines. The process is fairly simple; an individual goes to an approved location and gives a urine sample. Although the most common time to do a DOT drug test is prior to employment, employers may request a test at any given time. Other reasons an employer may request a drug test is after an accident, as a follow-up to a previously failed test, if the individual is returning to work, or if the employer finds other reasonable cause to test. The turn-around time for the results will vary depending on the lab; the typical time is 24-72 hours.

Here is a list of drugs the DOT regulated individual will be tested for:

 • Cocaine metabolites
 • Opiates-codeine, heroin, morphine (i.e., hydrocodone, oxycodone, hydromorphone, oxymorphone)
 • methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA)
 • Methamphetamines
 • Phencyclidine- also known as PCP
 • Marijuana metabolites and THC

It is wise to advise the employer if you are on any prescribed medication as well as advise the lab technician who will be taking your sample. The prescription must come from a licensed physician and the individual must be taking the proper amount. Excess levels of the medication will result in a failed drug test.

Alcohol Testing
The Department of Transportation may require an individual to submit to an alcohol test at random or after an accident. Alcohol tests are conducted by a Screening Test Technician or a Breath Alcohol Technician using a DOT approved device and will take a breath and saliva test. If the test is under 0.02 there is no need for additional testing. A result of 0.02 or higher will call for a confirmation test which is given between 15-30 minutes later.

Results
The Medical Review Officer will review the results of the drug test. There are only four options for the results; positive, negative, canceled, or refusal. Results would be available within 24 hours to 72 hours.

DOT Physical ExamHair Follicle Drug TestOral Saliva Drug/Alcohol Test

DOT PHYSICAL EXAM

General Information
Individuals looking to work in a position that is considered a safety-sensitive will have to pass a physical examination. The Department of Transportation has a set of guidelines that each person must pass prior to employment. These requirements are consistent for all 50 states. Generally speaking, when an employee is tested in one state and moves to another state for employment it is not required to take another DOT physical exam. There may be cases where the employer in the new state will request it, but if they do not then you do not need to seek one out on your own. Most Common Questions.

Below you will find a list of the most commonly asked questions pertaining to the DOT physical exam and the medical statement:

What is involved in the DOT physical exam?
The exam will test blood pressure, vision, and hearing. A urine sample will be taken to test for kidney disease and diabetes. In some cases, there may be a test for sleep apnea. In short, any condition that would cause a person to lose control or safely operate a commercial vehicle is cause for concern. These things include impaired limbs, heart disease, a mental disorder, epilepsy, or the use of particular drugs.

How important is disclosure during the exam?

Disclosing medical history during your exam is not necessarily required but highly encouraged. It will give the doctor a heads up on any other tests that may be required.

How long is the medical card good for?

If there are no restrictions, your DOT medical card will be valid for two years. If there are some restrictions on the card, it is typically valid for one year.

What is the 3-month medical card?
If the doctor finds that you have a restriction but can still drive, he or she will issue a 3-month medical card. This means the person is permitted to drive for 3 months; once
the card expires there is no renewal. Whatever the restriction was will have to be taken care of within those three months to get a standard medical card.

Is a drug test part of the physical exam?

No. The employer may order a drug test, but it is not part of the physical exam.

HAIR FOLLICLE DRUG TEST

Myths and Facts

Despite popular belief, hair follicle drug tests are not used to detect drug use going back seven years. Many people have the misconception that if an employer requests a hair follicle drug test that the results will show something from many years ago. There are a variety of reasons as to why an employer will request a hair follicle drug test. The main reason is that the odds of tampering with the sample are virtually non-existent. Also, the time frame to detect drugs is much wider with a hair test than a urine drug test. Below you will find common misconceptions about hair follicle drug testing
along with the correct facts.

Hair samples only detect the “hard-core” drugs.
Myth- A hair follicle drug test detects the same drugs that a five-panel urine drug test will detect. These include cocaine, opiates, marijuana, amphetamines, and phencyclidine. Many labs will offer an extended test to include a few other drugs; these are all lab specific.
The standard detection time is seven years. Myth- The standard detection time is actually 90 days depending on the length of the hair. If the hair is 18 inches long it is possible to detect drugs going back as far as three years. However, the typical length taken for a hair follicle drug test is 1.5 inches which are equal to roughly 90 days of detection.

Body hair cannot detect drugs.
Myth- In reality, body hair can detect drugs going back as far as 12 months. Those who are bald will often give a body hair sample. Hair coloring can hinder results. Myth- Numerous experiments have proven that hair coloring does not have an effect on the results.

Hair testing is more effective than urine drug tests.
Fact- Various studies have found that hair follicle drug tests have uncovered up to eight times the amount of drug use than a urine drug test. It takes longer to get the results from a hair follicle drug test than a urine drug test. Myth-It takes the same amount of time to get the results as it does to get the results of the urine drug test; 24-72 hours.

Complete Lab and Drug Test, LLC offers hair follicle drug testing services for employers in any industry looking to have their employees tested. Whether your business is a daycare, school, or any kind of large corporate company or small business or personal test Complete Lab and Drug Test, LLC can handle your needs.

ORAL FLUID (SALIVA) ALCOHOL/DRUG TEST

Purpose and Benefits
Employers looking to hire new employees will sometimes turn to a saliva drug test. Safety-sensitive employees will be required to take a saliva alcohol drug test after an accident or anytime the employer has reasonable cause. While the primary source of drug testing among employers is still a urine test, there are a few reasons why an employer may decide to do a saliva test instead. The results with a saliva test are almost
instantaneous, unlike the urine, hair and blood tests. Along those same lines, it is almost impossible to fake a saliva test. Another factor that comes into play is the fact that there is no need for a professional nurse or lab technician. All of these are benefits to saliva alcohol/drug testing.

Cons to Saliva Alcohol/Drug Tests
One downside to the saliva drug test is that any trace of drugs will only show in the saliva for 10-24 hours after use. This means that if the person took a particular drug, he or she can possibly wait until the last minute of their employer-given deadline to take the test and possibly pass. Even though it is practically impossible to fake a saliva test, it can be tampered with by eating specific foods and smoking cigarettes. Another downfall to saliva drug testing is that the detection time for benzodiazepines, one of the most common street drugs, is unknown. While it seems that saliva tests are quick, easy, and non-invasive the detection times are not as good compared to a urine or hair drug test.

Detection Times

Here is a breakdown of the detection times after consumption available for specific drugs through a saliva drug test:

 • Marijuana- five minutes up to 24 hours
 • Cocaine- three minutes up to 24 hours
 • Amphetamines- five minutes up to 72 hours
 • Phencyclidine- five minutes up to 72 hours
 • Barbiturates- 30 minutes up to 72 hours
 • Methamphetamines- 30 minutes up to 72 hours
 • Opiates- 60 minutes up to 72 hours

Do not trust just anyone with your saliva drug testing needs. Complete Lab and Drug (CLabDT) Test is the premier leader in the industry.
